That's a projected 531,200 new jobs!1 With the digital age constantly demanding new solutions for data storage, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and more, it's no surprise that IT workers are expected to be in high demand for the foreseeable future.

Not only are IT professionals in high demand, they have the luxury of being able to work in nearly any industry. Technology powers businesses of all kinds. That means tech jobs await you in a variety of fields, including retail, finance, manufacturing, and education.

This may not seem like much at first, but it can provide job security. Recessions and relatively rough economic conditions are commonplace. In uncertain times, having widely applicable and desirable skills is a great asset. IT skills have options, and having options is never a bad thing.

First of all, you don't want to choose your field of study based solely on future salary. If a career in IT already piques your interest. However, knowing that there are tons of earning potential is certainly a bonus.

According to the BLS, median annual salaries for IT professions in 2020 ranged from $55,510 for computer support specialists to $126,830 for computer and information research scientists, with a percentage of high earners bringing home even more than that.1 Your personal earning potential in an IT career will almost certainly vary due to a variety of factors, but you can be encouraged by the data showing that even the lowest IT earners are still taking home solid pay.

“IT will always challenge you to learn new things,” Abazher says. “Creativity and problem-solving are the cornerstones of this career.”

⚫You can find work opportunities in a lot of locations

The IT industry was leading the way in remote work even before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and turned many roles into work-from-home positions. “It is probably the most flexible career in terms of schedule. You can work on your own or in a team, whenever you like,” Abazher says.

It's not just remote work opportunities. A strong background in information technology gives you a knowledge base that can be applied anywhere in the world. “IT skills are universal in every country, unlike, for example, accountancy and law. Relocating is a common practice,” Abazher says.

Why study information technology? It turns out there are plenty of solid reasons to consider pursuing an IT career. After all, not every field can boast about the positive job outlooks, high salary potentials and fulfilling, innovative roles IT offers.
